Where to stay in El Calafate

Calafate is one of the most visited cities in Argentina, mostly because of its proximity to the stunning Perito Moreno glacier.

It is also one of the most expensive ones as well, as it is known for receiving foreign tourists all year long.

Posada Larsen is a good value for money bed and breakfast overlooking Lago Argentino (Argentinean Lake). It is surrounded by mountains and only 15 minutes away from the commercial centre.

It offers 24-hour front desk, free Wi-Fi and free private parking. They also serve a traditional Patagonian breakfast in the mornings. The rooms are modest but cosy, and its charming garden is a great place to relax and enjoy the view.

It is also close to Parrilla Don Pichon, one of the best restaurants in Calafate.

Aparts de los Pajaros are apartments located in the city centre, next to Libertador Avenue. With outstanding reviews on booking.com, this is a very popular accommodation that tends to sell out quickly.

All the apartments are clean, tidy, spacious and well equipped, coming with kitchenette, fridge, microwave, Netflix, toaster and more. Most of them also have an inner courtyard view. It’s ideal if you don’t have a car. There are also a few agencies around the corner if you need to hire tours.

Posada Karut Josh is a well-located posada, next to Libertador Avenue and 300 metres away from the main commercial area.

Rooms have either lake or mountain view and are styled in lively colours, with modern furnishing and work desks. A buffet breakfast, including homemade cakes, is served daily in a charming room overlooking the lake.

The staff (Claudia and Federico) is friendly and helpful, helping with everything you may need, from tours to restaurants and more. You can also stay for dinner and enjoy homemade dishes.

Patagonia Queen Hotel Boutique

Patagonia Queen Hotel Boutique is one of the favourite hotels in El Calafate, and the most expensive in this post.

It is well located, metres away from the main commercial street. The rooms are large and have private spa baths, minibar, heating and a safety deposit box. Facilities include a modest gym and a games room that comprises a pool table, board games and table tennis. Services of massage and laundry are available.

The breakfast is also delicious and includes fresh fruit salad and eggs on demand.

Linda Vista Apart Hotel

Linda Vista Apart Hotel is an aparthotel located in El Calafate downtown, next to the main street.

The accommodation comprises cosy wooden and stone chalets that fit up to 5 people. They are spacious and have a living room and a kitchenette with a microwave. Change of linens and cleaning services are included.

The breakfast is also good and contains regional products such as very tasty jams. They also offer traditional meals and a good selection of wines.

La Soberana

La Soberana is a beautiful, modern and peaceful inn, one of the best-rated options on booking.com. If you prefer silence and relaxation over the location, this could be your choice.

It is located on the newer part of El Calafate, not walking distance to the city centre. The rooms are spacious, clean and overlook the garden or the lake.

La Soberana offers a continental breakfast, including eggs, toasts, dulce de leche, cheese, ham, fresh fruit salad, warm medialunas and homemade cookies.

Susanna is an amazing host and also serves dinner with generous portions and really very reasonably priced.

Edelweiss Hostel

Edelweiss Hostel is the low-budget option on this list. Slightly outside the city, but not too far. It is 4.4 km from Lago Argentino, 300 metres from El Calafate Bus Station and 18 km from the airport.

Every room has a small patio with a mountain view. Bathrooms are shared like in most hostels, and other facilities are a shared kitchen, a spacious garden, a seating area and telescope.
